Surge in registrations of new cars on last day of the month
A SURGE of registrations on the last day of the month pushed new-car sales to within 6pc of last year.
New figures show sales rose 4pc in October to bring the total so far this year to 73,139 – or 4,803 behind last year.
However, one-in-five (331) of those ‘sold’ in October were registered on the last day of the month, according to the Motorcheck.ie figures. That means some brands registered cars to maintain market share and will sell them as ‘newsed’ vehicles at a discount over the coming weeks.
Volkswagen hold the overall lead with 13pc of sales with Toyota second just 77 vehicles ahead of Ford.
The Volkswagen Golf is still the most popular model of 2013 with sales of with 3,660 (5pc of the total market) sold. The Nissan Qashqai takes second place with 2,929 (4pc) with the Ford Focus in third on 2,786.
Diesel engines account for 73pc of those sold while 94pc of all car registrations were in the lowest A and B tax bands.
