Car sales up 40pc as scrap deal delivers

NEW-CAR sales are running 40pc ahead of the same time last year, according to the latest figures from Motorcheck.ie.
They say 44,972 cars have been registered so far this year, a 40pc rise on the 32,206 for the corresponding period in 2009.
From anecdotal evidence there are a lot of ‘10’ registrations on the roads. The scrappage scheme has given the industry a lift. It just goes to show how a judicious incentive can spark a recovery.
The €1,500 you get for a scrap car isn’t in itself going to entice you but, with the car companies knocking one another down to the very last to match that amount, and offering ‘special’ tradein deals, there is value out there.
