World record as 94-year-old Michael buys a new SEAT and explains why it had to be a 5dr
Michael Kearns has done much more than just buy himself a new car. He has also written himself into the record books.
By purchasing a new SEAT Mii small car he has become the oldest customer of that brand not just in Ireland but, the company believes, in the world.
The Co Offaly former postman is a mere 94 years young and he has just picked up his new car from well-known midlands' dealer Colton Motors - who have dealerships in Tullamore and Mullingar.
Michael was in great form as he recently took ownership of his latest new vehicle in Tullamore.
"Being awarded the title of the oldest SEAT customer is something I never saw coming," he said. "Overall, I am just delighted with my new Mii and want to thank all the team at Colton Motors for the help they have afforded me over the years."
He was quite clear on why he picked this particular model.
"There a number of reasons I chose the Mii. One is the fact that it has five doors. This is very important as a couple of my neighbours rely on me for lifts to Mass every weekend and the five-door is very convenient for this."
Michael bought his first car - a Morris 1000 - way back in 1962 from Albert Roberts a well-known car dealership in Tullamore at the time.
He has now bought four cars from Colton Motors. He has also driven several company cars during his working life - or 'bosses cars' as he describes them.
Keith Colton is dealer principal at Colton Motors. He said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have Mr Kearns as one of our most loyal customers.
"He is a real example to others; and his level of independence is admirable.
"We wish him all the best with his new car and, of course, we are here if he requires any further assistance."
SEAT director Niall Phillips added: "Mr Kearns' story is truly remarkable and we would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to him.
"Purchasing a new car at the age of 94 is such an uplifting story and we really hope Mr Kearns enjoys his SEAT Mii."
