Volkswagen has upped the ante for July-reg sales, by bringing in one year's free insurance for buyers of certain models.

The development is viewed as timely - for sales and because of surging insurance costs.

The 'pilot' project is for anyone aged 21+ with three years' no-claims bonus and a full Irish driving licence.

The single major condition is that they have to finance their new car - either the current city-car up! or Polo supermini - through Volkswagen Bank.

The comprehensive insurance package is underwritten by Zurich.

It is not known how much it will cost, as premiums will vary on an individual basis.

The initiative, which started on Friday, aims to attract new drivers to boost the sales of the two models.

The Volkswagen Group spokesman said interest rates on HP and PCP deals will not be raised to meet the cost; they start from 3.9pc APR.

There is a no-claims discount of up to 55pc.

Other conditions include having no more than four penalty points and not having made more than one claim of €5,000 or above in the past five years.
