Volkswagen here has begun a major campaign to hold and woo customers for next year in the eye of the emissions storm.

It claims it is adding a number of elements of equipment to cars for 161 and is promising three-years free servicing on "all retail sales".

The company is also aiming to get more people into higher-spec cars by pitching its PCP rates lower for those cars than for less well-equipped models.

This is a strategy that has worked well for the firm to date.

The promotion comes against the backdrop of the ongoing scandal which has now extended to CO2 emissions.

The company here had no comment to make on reports that cars found to have C02 emissions that were 10pc higher than officially stated might be bought back from customers.

It is expected that upwards of 9,000 cars could be affected here.
