As part of a global recall of 2.27 million cars world wide Toyota Ireland are recalling Yaris, Corolla and Avensis cars sold between 2000 and 2004 because of an airbag fault that could cause a fire.

This is another recall by Toyota who over the last two months recalled almost nine million vehicles covering 20 models.

In a statement sent into Japan's transport ministry Toyota said:

"There is a risk that the airbag container could break down and scatter around, which could cause fire or injuries."

While the details of what could happen aren't revealed yet a Japanese customer has made a complaint that said his passenger seat was burned due to the fault. There have been no serious injuries or accidents connected to the defect that have been reported.

Toyota have had record sales and good profits despite a number of recalls and paying out $1.2bn to settle US criminal charges where Toyota were accused of covering up a sticky pedal blamed for a number of deaths.

Irish customers can expect contact in the near future, if you think your car might be one of the range that's in the recall you can call your local dealer or phone Toyota Ireland on 01 419 0222.
