The next Volkswagen Touran people carrier has just been revealed. It is due here in November after making its debut at Geneva next week.

There will be five-seat and seven-seat versions but just the latter for Ireland.

The new MPV is 13cm longer and the wheelbase is up 11cm which allows for a lot more interior space, Volkswagen say.

There is a new folding-seat set-up which means you can generate a flat floor for carrying bulky items.

The carmaker also claims that the cabin area has undergone major changes and has a high level of finish and materials.

Incidentally, the five-seater version has 1,040 litres of luggage space (claimed to be the biggest in class) with the seats folded.

The new car will also have an infotainment system that can fully integrate with both Apple and Android smartphones and voice control.

The engines are said to be up to 19pc more economical than before (a 62kg weight reduction helps). The 1.6-litre 110bhp with 7spd DSG, for example, uses a claimed 4.1 litres every 100km.

Expect three diesels - the 1.6-litre 110bhp, and 2-litre with 150bhp and 190bhp.

And at least two petrols - a 1.2-litre TSI turbo petrol and a 1.4-litre 150bhp.
