Used-car imports, already flying ahead of last year, surged 56pc in the first five days of June. The scarcity of good used cars on the home market is seen as one of the major drivers of a vibrant trade now; the timing of the bank holiday can also play a part.

There is an underlying upward trend and registrations are running nearly 20pc ahead, according to Motorcheck.ie statistics. The numbers registered up to June 5 are 788, compared with 504 for last year.

Wexford gears up for motor show

THE annual Wexford Motor Show takes place on Saturday at the quayside in Wexford town. More than 15,000 visitors are expected and admission is free.

Organised by local motor dealers and SIMI, this year there will be 120 new vehicles, 100 vintage sports and classic cars, electric vehicles, and the RSA’s road show.

Fords for 70pc of GoCar fleet

MORE than three-in-five vehicles operated by pay-as-you-go car rental GoCar will be a Ford under an expanded new deal.

GoCar, which operates in Dublin and Cork, will now have 70pc of its car and van fleet with the famous blue oval on the grille.

The rental service lets people pick up a car |when they need it – and leave it where it suits |them. The cars enjoy |free slots at on-street parking spaces in |Dublin.

Renault to press on with sports car

AFTER acquiring interest held by Caterham Group, Renault will continue its development of its Alpine sports car, which will be unveiled in 2016. Caterham plans to continue with its own sports car too.
