NEW-CAR registrations for January surged by 10,000 - to nearly 40,000 - and have paved the way for a massive increase in purchases for the year overall.
New figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show a 33.5pc lift to 39,812 (from 29,808 in January 2015).
Hyundai topped the sales charts for the month followed by Toyota, Ford, Volkswagen, Nissan, Renault, Skoda, Opel, KIA and Audi.
And the big-selling models were the Hyundai Tucson, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia, Toyota Yaris, Nissan Qashqai, Toyota Auris and Renault Clio.
Commercial sales are also forging ahead – a clear sign of business confidence in the economy.
The phenomenal buying spree has prompted forecasts that we could buy an average of 1,000 new cars a week more than last year.
One top executive is predicting that as many as 170,000 new-car regs will be on the road before the end of the year such has been the surge in buying so far.
That would be an increase of 45,000 on last year and 20,000 more than the most optimistic expert forecasts early in the year.
According to Renault Ireland chief Paddy Magee the original and optimistic estimate of 150,000 will easily be passed.
