€35,995 for Skoda's RS 230
SKODA'S new Octavia RS 230 will cost from €35,995 when it goes on sale here next month. The Combi (estate) version will come in at €37,095. Prices in both cases are for 6spd manuals - there is also an automatic 6spd DSG dual-clutch transmission.
The car is called the RS 230 because, logically enough, the 2-litre TSI petrol develops 230bhp (0-to-100kmh in 6.7 seconds). Its top speed of 250kmh (156mph) makes it the fastest series-produced Octavia to date.
It is also the first Skoda to have an electronically controlled front differential lock to help handle all that power and provide better traction and cornering.
Standard equipment includes new sports seats, 19ins alloys, black-design twin exhausts and front grille, a specially tuned tailpipe sound, leather interior, a colour Maxi Dot display with a lap timer. In DSG models, there are paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.
The new car has 10bhp more than the existing 220bhp 2-litre petrol TSI.
Since 2013 the RS versions have accounted for more than 6pc of all Octavia sales, with the 2-litre TDI (184bhp) the big seller.
