I am a great believer that car-sharing, along with alternative technologies, is the way forward for motoring, so I was pleased to hear that GoCar, Ireland's only car-sharing initiative, announced further expansion of its operation by unveiling a new GoCar base at The Square, Tallaght, last week.

The new base will be served by three vehicles; the GoCity, a Hyundai i20, the GoTripper, a Hyundai i30 and the GoVan, a Ford Transit Connect. To mark the launch of the base, new members can sign up to GoCar for just €10, which represents a discount of €40 on the standard €50 registration fee. New members can avail of this discount by using the promo code 61TALLAGHT.

GoCar works on a pay-per-trip basis, which allows its members the freedom to access a vehicle where and when they need it. Members benefit from free parking at any pay-and-display parking space and this will be the case at the new base in Tallaght.

The launch of the new base is another positive development in the evolution of car-sharing in Ireland and the overall GoCar story following the recent enactment of government legislation allowing for local authorities to designate exclusive parking spaces for car-sharing clubs.

Since its launch in 2013, GoCar has experienced rapid growth, seeing its membership base grow to over 5,000 members. This increase in membership means its fleet of vehicles has now expanded to 133 with 103 GoCar bases supporting this fleet.

GoCar is also fast approaching another significant milestone of 25,000 trips.
