A Mercedes showroom, but with no new models

THE used price list says approved dealer. The website says main dealer yet, deep down, TR Motor services spells ‘more service’ dealer.

Our visit was in pursuit of a used C Class Mercedes and since we failed to find specific parking we put a few euro into a parking meter and parked up across the road.

Positioned between a dog track and a pub maybe TR Motors has some sort of arrangement for customers to park, but we failed to find any.

As garages go, it is well positioned on a very busy road, and close to the city centre. We found a small showroom to the left and a very large workshop behind.

The workshop was packed, looked well-organised and suggested a large customer base for service and repair. Indeed, we have proof that the people at TR Motors are good at their jobs: a Mercedes owner recently made it known to us that the level of customer care she received was excellent considering she had not previously been a customer.

The showroom had four used cars: an 06 C-Class 180, 07 C-Class 220 diesel (new model), 08 CLK and 00 ML 270 Cdi. Interestingly they had a similar amount of children's pedal Mercedes models at the front of the showroom .

Where TR falls, or trips, is that the sales seemingly take second place. Firstly there was no salesperson present – Daryl Tisdall told us so. “Sorry, he is at a meeting,” he told us. “May I take your details?” We left our details.

The showroom was clean, big enough for today’s interest in cars, yet without creature comforts such as brochure stands and a waiting area with facilities. There was a small accessory cabinet. We'd love to have it for our model cars, and two C-Class brochures on top.

Daryl presented us with a used car list. It has seven Mercs, but the 07 C 220 diesel was not on it. Any idea of price, Daryl? It’s only in, he told us. They also had an 07 VW EOS and 07 Hyundai Coupe in stock. The staff facilities – toilets – were fine. Except for the signs of hard-working hands at the sink area (small splashes of grease), they were fine but not up to many of the standards we've found elsewhere.

We left TR Motors bewildered. Their used cars were immaculately presented and their staff representative was friendly. What we really could not fathom was why, here in the busiest sales month of the year, we found no new Mercedes on view. We are still scratching our heads.
