Mindful moment… What's the lesson?

There's a theory in spiritual circles that every situation we find ourselves in is there to teach us a lesson. So when we find ourselves in a job we hate or we go broke or get sick, we might rail against the unfairness of it all - but actually there is something to be learned in each of those situations. Maybe the lesson is how to stand up for yourself to your bullying boss. Maybe the lesson is that money isn't everything or to be more respectful of money. Maybe the lesson is learning to slow down and have a more balanced life in order to stay healthy.
There is another theory too that says until we have learnt the lesson being offered by the universe, we will keep finding ourselves in similar situations, year after year after year. You leave one bullying boss only to find yourself with another one. You recover from one illness only to come down with another one a year later.
I'm not sure if any of this is true but I think it might be. I certainly find myself in the same situations time and time again. The people involved might be different, the circumstances slightly different but, actually, the situation is the same. So, now instead of moaning and groaning, I'm trying to ask myself - what is the lesson I'm supposed to be learning here? n Marianne Power is the author of helpmeblog.net
