The River Dodder makes a turbulent 26-kilometre journey from Kippure Mountain, where it rises, to the docklands, where it joins the River Liffey to meet the sea.
Along the way its progress is slowed by several weirs, and as it makes its way through the city it provides the inhabitants with drinking water, angling opportunities, and riverside walks.
One of the weirs is at Dodder Road Lower in Rathfarnham, Dublin 14, where it enhances the spectacle of gushing water for the residents across the street.
Number 32 Dodder Road Lower is part of a short terrace of handsome redbrick period houses with bay windows and arched doorways.
To complement the riverside view at the front, it also has a lush 70ft garden out the back, with a patio, partly paved and partly in gravel, surrounded by flowering climbers and with a built-in barbecue. Elsewhere there's a lawn and an abundance of shrubs and flowers.
As well as providing a relaxing outdoor room, the garden may offer an opportunity for a new owner to extend the house, if desired.
At present, it's 980 sq ft with three bedrooms on the first floor, along with a shower room. Downstairs there's a drawing room and a dining room, both with fireplaces and linked by an archway, as well as a small galley kitchen measuring just over 10ft by 6ft. The kitchen calls out to be extended if you can bear to sacrifice some of the garden.
The attic has also been converted to provide a skylit room measuring 16ft by 12ft, which is currently used as an extra bedroom.
From here's it's about a 10-minute walk to Terenure village, and a 10-minute drive to the M50. Number 32 Dodder Road Lower is for sale for €595,000 with Sherry FitzGerald Terenure, (01) 490 7433.
