In its Victorian heyday, Kilkee, Co Clare, was such a famous seaside resort that it attracted illustrious visitors such as poet Alfred Tennyson and author Charlotte Brontë, who honeymooned there.

It first came to life in the early 1800s with packet steamers carrying passengers down the Shannon from Limerick, and it boomed when the West Clare Railway opened later in the 19th century. To this day, Kilkee is thronged with holidaymakers from Limerick all summer long.

The so-called West End is the historic part of town, and Water's Edge is a bay-windowed period property there, built in the 1860s and looking out over the Atlantic.

With seven en-suite bedrooms, Water's Edge has been in use as a Bed & Breakfast for several years now, but could easily make a rather sumptuous family home instead.

Though unpretentious looking from the street, it's actually 5,264 sq ft in size, on two storeys and includes a converted attic, while there's also a back garden and six parking spaces.

Once inside the front porch, you enter a grand, 30ft by 16ft foyer, with an oak, open-string staircase and a seating area.

As well as this foyer, there are two main reception rooms on this level, a living room and a dining room. Both are at the front of the house and enjoy uninterrupted sea views, and both also have fireplaces.

Sliding doors lead from the dining room to the kitchen, which measures over 18 ft by 29 ft and has high-gloss cabinets and a partly glazed roof. Of the seven bedrooms, two are on the top floor and five have views of the sea.

Kilkee is about an hour by car from Shannon Airport, and an hour and a half from Limerick city. Sherry FitzGerald McMahon, (065) 686 7866, is the agent, and the asking price is €775,000.
