Three to choose from at Enfield hotspotRoyal Oaks, Enfield, Co Meath
From the 1790s, the location of modern-day Enfield was called a variety of names, morphing from "A New Inn" to "The New Inn" after a mail-coach inn called The Royal Oak Inn that stood on the 18th-century coach route from Dublin to Mullingar.
Towards the end of the 19th century, a postmaster who came to Enfield from a village of the same name in England decided to call the village where he made his new home Enfield too.
There is a nod to that 18th-century coach house at Royal Oaks, a new development of three and four-bed homes. Travelling by stage coach or on the Royal Canal may have fallen by the wayside, but Enfield remains a hotspot for modern-day commuters seeking easy connectivity to Dublin. The village is just a three-minute drive to the M4 interchange and is also on the Dublin-to-Sligo rail line.
Royal Oaks, about 500m from the canal, was launched in August and the final 15 homes there have just gone on the market, nine of which are still for sale. There are three house types available in this tranche, all of which are called, naturally, after oak trees. These are the Black Oak, a three-bed semi-detached style with 1,453 sq ft of space and a €305,000 price tag, and the Champion Oak which, at 1,475 sq ft, is a tad larger and therefore priced from €310,000. There is also a four-bed detached design called the Holm Oak, which measures 1,787 sq ft and is priced from €399,500. Each home has an additional 258 sq ft of storage space in the attic, which has flooring, lighting and a fold-down stairs to enable any future conversion.
The three-beds have a half-brick, half-render façade, with brick quoin detail, a slate canopy over a black front door, and windows with black frames. Out front, there is enough parking for two cars on the Lismore cobble-locked driveways. Side-gates provide access to the rear gardens.
Interior touches include plaster cornicing to the main living room and hallway, and a contemporary-style kitchen with an island unit. Upstairs, there are fitted wardrobes to each bedroom and the ensuite in the master bedroom has a large walk-in shower area. The homes at Royal Oaks have an A2 BER - utility bills are slashed by high-performance windows and doors, and energy-efficient heating from the Dimplex A-Class air-source heat pump.
Viewing at Royal Oaks is by appointment.
