Stone-fronted style in Cork’s Kerry Pike

Mitchell’s Court, Kerry Pike, Co Cork

Just a quick spin from Apple's European headquarters at Hollyhill - but with a distinctly more pastoral and venerable feel than the Cork northside suburb - lies Kerry Pike. The picturesque village, high above the Lee Valley and surrounded by woodland, is the setting for Mitchell's Court, a development of 33 four-bed detached homes.

The scheme was named after local author Maude Mitchell, who wrote about the Irish Civil War and once owned the land on which Mitchell's Court was first build in the Noughties.

David and John Coleman developed 19 out of the planned 33 houses at the scheme. But in 2008, when the development had its inauspiciously timed launch to the fanfare of a brass band, the property bubble's demise was already on the cards and building ceased.

In 2015, O'Flynn Construction bought the remainder of the site with planning permission for 14 more homes and began finishing out Mitchell's Court. A soft launch for the first eight units was held last autumn, but a showhouse has just been completed to market the remaining properties. While the type A range, which measures 2,440 sq ft, is sold out, there are still eight homes from the B, C and D styles. The B house type has 2,367 sq ft of living space and costs from €580,000, while the C design measures 2,311 sq ft and is priced from €585,000. The smaller D style has 2,272 sq ft of accommodation and is selling for €530,000.

All the houses are double-fronted and fitted with PVC double-glazed windows with limestone windowsills.

There are also stone features to the façades of the B and C styles and to the perimeter walls, reflecting the scheme's rural environs.

The individual houses vary in size, aspect and garden size, but all are laid out over two floors. The ground floor has a kitchen, dining room, utility room, family room, living room and study. The centrepiece of the living room is a solid-fuel stove. Upstairs, two of the four bedrooms are ensuite and there is a family bathroom.

Because Mitchell's Court is located on the northwest outskirts of Cork city with quick access to the North Ring Road and to Apple, it has been appealing to trader-uppers and families moving to Cork to work at the city's largest employer, or at Cork University Hospital and University College Cork.
