Join the Mayo elite near Castlebar
Castlebar, the county town of Mayo has a long, if not altogether glorious, political pedigree. As well as being an important site in the 1798 rebellion, it's also the birthplace of both the Fianna Fáilers Charlie Haughey and Pádraig Flynn, and the home town of Enda Kenny (though he was born at nearby Islandeady). There must be something in the air there.
If so, you'll be able to breathe plenty of it in the surroundings of this large detached house about three kilometres due east of Castlebar, in the townland of Carheens or Corheens.
It has a floor area is 3,434 sq ft which could make a nightmare of the hoovering, but luckily the house is equipped with a central vacuum system which will help make lighter work of keeping the floors clean.
And the floors, like most of the fittings in the house, are expensive ones. Inside the front door is a rather grand entrance hall with an Italian tiled floor and an elaborate curved staircase in wrought iron.
There are three reception rooms on this floor - a living room with a gas fireplace, a sitting room with another fireplace, this time in local stone, and a dual-aspect dining room with a cherrywood floor.
The kitchen doubles as a less formal dining room, and has another Italian tiled floor and birch cabinets with granite countertops, and there are double doors there to a deck outside.
There's also one ground floor bedroom, with a dressing room and en-suite. The other four bedrooms are upstairs, including the master bedroom which has another en-suite and walk-in wardrobe. Bedroom five is also en-suite, while the main bathroom on this level has a Jacuzzi bath and a his-and-hers glass sink unit.
The house is on 0.6 of an acre with a gravel driveway and a detached garage. It's for sale for €399,000 with Sherry FitzGerald Crowley in Westport (098) 29009.
