A home is the one place where people can truly express themselves and a generic fit won't do when it comes to interiors, one of Ireland's leading designers has said.

Róisín Lafferty, of Kingston Lafferty Designs, a judge of RTÉ's 'Super Garden', was speaking at House 2016, Ireland's newest interior-design event. The three-day festival attracted about 3,000 people on its opening yesterday in the main hall at the RDS.

Speaking on the Miele Inspiration Stage, Ms Lafferty explained: "Your home is the only space you can truly be you and express yourself.

"The design of your home should be inspiring you and almost how you live your life."

Meanwhile, the psychological aspects of interiors were covered by Adele Roche of Happy Days Design. Ms Roche said the right colour could be used to get children to sleep well.

"Look at the colours surrounding them when they get to bed, especially during the summer when it's not dark.

"Blue is the most popular colour in the world and it is shown to be the most easy to sleep in."

More than 150 exhibitors will attend the Independent News & Media event this weekend.

Tickets are €10 at the door and under-12s go free when accompanied by an adult.
