Everything in life can have a knock-on effect on one's home, believes RTÉ 'Super Garden' judge Róisín Lafferty.
Ms Lafferty, who runs Kingston Lafferty Designs, was speaking on the Inspiration Stage of house 2016 at the RDS this afternoon.
She explained that being a designer is more than a "sweet pretty job" where "you just pick colours" and that good relationships with clients is a vital element of the profession.
"You kind of have to trust me straight away and I have to trust you," she said. "The client is the most important part of any design job. Ultimately people work better with people that they like."
Her work involves acting as an "almost counsellor" when dealing with couples who differ over tastes.
"It shouldn't be about us enforcing things on people, it needs to be open, maybe with our ideas there too. Generally people would prefer if it was our idea rather than their spouse."
The talk also stressed the importance of making the most of one's space, regardless of the size of their home.
"Your home is the only space you can truly be you and express yourself," she said.
"The design of your home should be inspiring you and almost how you live your life.
"Look at imagery - how you dress, the places you've travelled to, where you go back to. Your home doesn't have to be this perfect stagnant space because your life isn't.
"Be a bit brave and have fun, if it doesn't work you can paint over it."
