  • Go To

Clutter-free

Create a cosy space by clearing spare room clutter and sprucing up with fresh bedding and some well chosen accessories. A bedside clock, fresh flowers and a few good books are nice welcoming touches.

A Place for everything

No wardrobe space? Well even if you do, considering half of the rubbish you have cleared from the room is now probably in there, you're short on space anyway. Rather than attempting another clear-out, wheel in a stylish clothes rail instead.

Clean towels

Turn a care-worn en-suite into a spa sanctuary with some plump towels and well chosen smellies. Replenish soap and make sure you have hand towels out and ready to use. Check that you have plenty of toilet roll stocked up and empty any rubbish from bins.

Slumber down

The current trending for mismatching bedlinen is perfect for your guest room as it means you can use some of your less new (ahem) sheets and still make a stylish and inviting space.

Hotel chic

Because nobody wants to be fumbling around in the dark when they need to re-hydrate, another bedside essential is a carafe of water and a glass. And make sure there's a bedside lamp in situ too.

● Glass carafe and tumbler, €17, Nordic House, nordichouse.co.uk

A Real Scents of Home

If the room isn't in regular use, make sure guests arrive to an inviting space by thoroughly cleaning and airing in advance. Add some fragrant greenery or scented candles to add to the homely atmosphere.

Get the look:

● The Town House candle blends notes of eucalyptus and thyme with tonka bean and oakmoss. It's approx €46 at thewhitecompany.com. Winter home scenting kits are from €76, The White Company at Brown Thomas

Comfortable throws and blankets

Even if the heating has been on full blast all day, temperatures can plummet overnight so make sure there are enough extra covers to hand in the room. A hot water bottle set down beside a kettle, with herbal teas and biscuits in a small tin, are also lovely hotel-like touches.
