Why is choosing the right tiles proving difficult?

Declan Feely

I'm debating whether or not to tile my kitchen floor and also what tiles to use. There is so much choice. I'm confused, any advice on the subject?

There are so many reasons why you should tile your kitchen floor. They help to make your kitchen look more attractive, and at the same time add durability and practicality as they are easy to clean.

There are several types of tiles that could be used to tile your kitchen floor such as ceramic, porcelain, slate, marble, granite, travertine, Saltillo and so much more.

The first thing that you need to do after deciding that you want to tile your kitchen floor is to choose the type of tile that you want to use.

First of all, it is important to decide on the material of the tile. Ceramic and porcelain are very easy to clean, but they are not quite as durable compared to most other types of tiles.

However, ceramic and porcelain tiles are much cheaper compared to other types, which is the main reason most people go for them.

Slate tiles are a much more durable choice, and they give that natural look to the kitchen. Slate tiles are also non-slip and are able to resist stains.

Marble tiles are extremely popular due to their aesthetic value, however they can be quite slippery if in contact with water. Marble is also easy to clean and maintain and it is oil and stain resistant.

Marble tiles are slightly vulnerable to scratch and etching.

Granite looks good and is much more durable and could withstand scratching and etching more than marble. However, it requires regular maintenance.

Travertine is nice, but it is best to choose larger-sized tiles for more durability, and it needs to be sealed and polished to avoid the tiles from absorbing moisture.

Saltillo tiles are very beautiful and sought after due to their aesthetic value, but they are not as durable as the rest and need regular maintenance. Choose the material of the tile according to your needs. Also take into consideration the size of the tiles as well.

Should you tile the kitchen floor yourself or hire an expert?

Once you have chosen the type of tile that you think would suit your kitchen best, if you have the skills you could simply order the amount of tiles needed and do the installation yourself.

However, if you are not confident with your skills, or you want things to be easier for you, simply hire an expert. Onlinetradesmen.ie would have a host of flooring and tiling companies and they would be more than happy to help with your tiling project.
