Wexford's fountain of youth
Annie Elizabeth French, the owner of Newbay House in Wexford, was 93 when she died (in 1963).
Her obituary in the Wexford 'Free Press', describing her as one of the most beautiful women in Co Wexford, added that she kept her lovely looks right up to the end of her life.
There must be something in the air around Newbay House (now a country house hotel), which allowed Annie not only to live to 93 but to hang onto her beauty right up to the last minute.
If so, you might like to try the effect yourself at 'Kalina', a sprawling detached house about a kilometre down the road from the hotel in the townland of Coolree, with distant views of the River Slaney.
It measure some 4,000 sq ft in a dormer arrangement, with five bedrooms.
Three of the bedrooms are on the first floor, including the master bedroom which has a walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with a Jacuzzi bath. There's another Jacuzzi bath in the family bathroom on this floor.
The other two bedrooms are downstairs, with one en-suite.
The ground floor also has a dual-aspect sitting room with a marble fireplace and double doors to a sunroom, as well as a living room.
The kitchen, also dual-aspect, has a solid-fuel stove, marble countertops and a breakfast bar, and there are French doors there to the spacious garden.
There's also a playroom or study on this level and an integrated garage.
The study and en-suite bedroom are at one end of the house and so might be used as a granny or nanny flat.
Kalina is on 1.2 acres with lawns, patios and a deck, and it's about five kilometres from the centre of Wexford town.
The agent is Keane Auctioneers (053) 912 3072 and the asking price is €595,000.
