To the southwest of UCD’s Belfield campus, at Ardilea in Clonskeagh, Dublin 14, is a warren of residential estates all named after prestigious universities. Among them are Sorbonne, Louvain, Salamanca, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Heidelberg. Trinity isn’t one of them, for what are perhaps fairly obvious geopolitical reasons.
This is one sure way to remind residents that the point of living near a university is to get a good education.
If you lived at Number 2 Heidelberg, you could walk to UCD in about 15 minutes and have no excuse for being late for lectures. It is a detached dormer-style house of 3,003 sq/ft, and it also has an attic conversion consisting of some 400 sq/ft.
In spite of the sheer abundance of space, though, there are just the four bedrooms in the property, most of the accommodation having been given over to vast array of interconnected reception rooms.
The entrance hall opens into a large, open-plan drawing room and dining room, where there’s an antique marble fireplace with a coal-effect gas fire.
The drawing room is around 27ft by 19ft, and the adjoining dining room is another 17ft by 12ft.
From there you reach an inner hall, with the kitchen to the left. It has an adjoining breakfast area with doors to the garden, as well as a separate utility room.
On the other side of the house there’s a study with a fitted desk and shelving, and behind that a family room with another fireplace.
All four bedrooms are upstairs, including the master bedroom, which has a walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite with a jacuzzi bath.
The site is 0.2 of an acre, with gardens front and back. Number 4 Heidelberg is for sale for €1.25m with Hunters Estate Agents (01) 688 0008.
