A visit to Ashford in Co Wicklow usually means two things: a long walk through the Devil's Glen woods followed by a reward at the café in Mount Usher Gardens. The walk brings you down to the valley floor with the striking waterfall being one of the highlights of your journey. This marks the spot where the Vartry enters the Devil's Glen en route to the sea.

  • Go To

The wooded valley got its sinister sounding name from the loud crashing of the waterfall. Before the Vartry Reservoir was built in the 1860s, the roar was much more pronounced than it is today, and as it echoed through the gorge they say it sounded like "a Satanic power announcing some great doom". If you've still got some energy in the tank, upon arrival at Mount Usher you can refuel at the cafe before taking on the 22-acre, award-winning gardens.

Now imagine you could look out across this countryside wallowing in the luxury of a sunken bath tub and from the vantage point of a wide first floor window. The bath view is one of many luxuries at Hunter's Rest which is accessed via electric gates near Killoughter Crossroads.

The hallway has a polished porcelain tiled floor. To the left of the hall is the study. It looks like an old-world library, with bespoke fitted shelving, a stately desk and an open fireplace.

To the right of the hallway is the living room. This is a large and bright reception room, also with tiled flooring and windows overlooking the garden. It has sliding doors with steps down into the family room. This room is less formal, with an emphasis on comfort. There is plenty of space for a cosy living area and a dining area. There are double doors in this room that lead out to the garden.

The kitchen has everything a keen chef could want. It is fitted with walnut units and has a large breakfast bar with high stools. There is a utility room off the kitchen with extra storage and a door to the garden, and a guest bathroom to the side.

Then the fun begins as you are led into the den area. This retreat houses a games room with snooker table and a gym. There is a surround sound system in the room, so it would be the perfect hideaway for teenagers or a great venue for parties.

A walnut staircase brings you to the first floor of the house. There are five bedrooms on this level. The master bedroom definitely has the wow factor. The views are at their best from this room and the owners made the most of this with the floor-to-ceiling windows. At night, the wonderful vista can be put to bed behind bi-folding shutters that cover the windows. There is a solid oak floor in the bedroom and a gas fire with seating area.

It truly is the bedroom of dreams and just when you think it couldn't get any better, you walk into the master en-suite and are greeted by the high end window fronting a sunken tub and a door out to a terrace.

A further four bedrooms make up the first floor - two doubles, two singles. All bedrooms, bar one, have views out over the gardens and on out to the sea. There is solid timber flooring in all of the rooms. You'll also find another two bathrooms on this floor. The main bathroom is panelled and has an antique, roll-top bath. The other is a more contemporary wet room.

The mature gardens are a pleasure to walk out into. Meandering paths lead you through the lawns and you can step your way down to the 'entertainment' area. With a built-in charcoal barbecue and covered seating for a good crowd, the only thing that could ruin your party would be the weather.

Hunter's Rest is at the top of Killoughter Lane, where a 1.5km walk takes you straight onto Killoughter beach. Ashford is just off the M11, with a drive to Dublin taking about 45 minutes, making this house a possibility for city workers looking for a country lifestyle for their families.

The agents Sherry FitzGerald are handling the sale of Hunter's Rest with a guide price of €995,000. There will be an open viewing of the property tomorrow between 1pm-2pm.
