Relief over plans for Shrewsbury Rd pad

Residents of the upmarket Shrewsbury Road have breathed a sigh of relief that their newest neighbours plan to restore the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) headquarters on the road to its former residential glory.
Ballyrowan Residential, a company believed to be associated with an Irish venture capitalist, is applying for permission to revamp the property and remove former PSI classrooms. PSI is believed to have sold Woodside, a former archbishop's palace, for around €8m and the proceeds from the sale go to the Department of Health.
Shrewsbury residents have long been keen to preserve the neighbourhood's up-market ambience, as reflected in their prolonged planning battles over the re-development of the former Chester Beatty library.
The Chinese Embassy's recent acquisition of solicitor Eugene McCague's semi-detached house next to the embassy on Ailesbury Road was also welcomed as a sign that the area will retain its status in the embassy belt.
