Prices for apartments and townhouses in Galway county have been slashed and during the past four months two-bedroom apartments fell by between 38pc and 41pc, and more than 60pc from their peak.

In contrast, second-hand three-bedroom semi-detached houses fell by 21pc in the past four months and 51pc from their peak levels. New five-bedroom detached houses fell 20pc in the four months and 39pc from peak levels.

The average time it takes to get a property sale agreed varies considerably, ranging from eight weeks to eight months. A number of agents stated there was an oversupply of three-bedroom semi-detached houses in some areas.

Agents to the west and south of Galway City, and in Connemara, reported increased activity since last April but there was no agreement on the outlook.
