A home by the sea brings out the romantic in most of us, and so it has proved with Mermaid Isle, a unique property nestling in a bay on the Ring of Kerry.
Museum designer Kevin O'Farrell and writer Lori Kearney first came here 25 years ago when the elevated shoreline location between Sneem and Caherdaniel appealed not only to their Irish American heritage but to their creative instincts.
Whatever about mystical mermaids, a pod of seals still lives across the stretch of water towards the island of Illaundrane.
Kevin and Lori have cut their asking price by 47pc from €7.5m. to €3.95m. About half the 25-acre property is on Illaundrane Island, which is accessible on foot when the tide is out.
The section on the mainland accommodates a six-bedroom residence as well as an imaginatively refurbished guest cottage.
Built in 1998, in the style of a medieval post and beam barn, the main house has a total floor area of 450sqm and enjoys an imaginative use of timber and glass.
The 83sqm cottage is available separately on a 745sqm plot for €695,000.
It will come with a right of way through the grounds and the couple are willing to do a deal on the amount of land with the cottage.
Its refurbishment was a labour of love as reflected in the unusual timber features. Dining and relaxing takes place in its 18sqm conservatory. The view on all sides is of the garden and the still waters beyond.
The pretty village of Sneem is just over 10km away while Castlecove is about 4km away.
