On the market: Thornhill Lodge
Rewind back a hundred years and Thornhill Lodge was right out in the countryside – one of the two gate lodges attached to Thornhill House.
Typically a loyal servant lived in full time with the job of opening and closing the gates for the "big house" family carriage as well as doctoring the visitors day and night.
The gate lodge was therefore a combination of a security checkpoint of entry for the country house estate as well as a courtesy greeting point for whomever might be arriving to take tea.
Today it's a quaint slice of rural and big house history in Dublin's south suburbs with an address at "Dublin Road", Stillorgan, also giving away its former country roots.
Unlike a lot of lodges which tended to be around 500 sq ft, Thornhill has a good deal more space and at 1,313 sq ft is larger that the typical family semi. Another bonus extra is its own private gated courtyard.
Accommodation comprises a reception hall, kitchen/dining room, study, large living room, three bedrooms (with master ensuite) and bathroom.
The location is extremely convenient with all amenities close by including schools, colleges, parks and excellent public transport offering easy access to and from the city centre and surrounding suburbs.
Most gate lodges tended to be deliberate architectural imitations in miniature of the "big house" – and therefore came with impractical tiny windows.
Not so again at Thornhill Lodge where regular-sized panes allow the light to flood in to maximise the brightly painted and decorated interiors.
Its architect-supervised conversion also includes such practicalities as double glazing, gas-fired central heating and velux windows for additional natural lighting.
There's also an elevated balcony area with double doors to enjoy that courtyard garden.
