My GIY diary: Week 60

I did a big clear-out of the potting shed this week, planting out seedlings that, in truth, should have been planted a week or two ago. Eight to 10 pepper plants went out in to the polytunnel, along with a quartet of fine aubergine plants. I also planted in the polytunnel three to four module trays of lettuce, some basil and four melon plants.

The pepper and aubergine plants are spaced about 45cm apart – even when fully grown they are quite neat little plants, which means there's plenty of space between them to sow a few heads of lettuce.

The lettuce will be ready to eat in a few weeks, long before they can cause the peppers and aubergines any problems. This applies to lots of plants – sweetcorn, courgettes, squash, pumpkin etc – use the space between them in the interim by planting up with quick-growing salad veg like radish, rocket, lettuce, annual spinach and so on.
