At present there are only some half-dozen houses for sale in Killiney for €375,000 or less. So it's a bit of a Hobson's choice for house-hunters who have their hopes pinned on Killiney and their budgets pinned elsewhere.
As long as you don't need a great deal of space, though, you can do quite well as regards location. Take Firgrove, a cul de sac enclave just off Military Road - handy for the shops, about eight minutes' walk from the beach and less than a kilometre from the DART station.
Built in 1987, Number 1 Firgrove is an end-of-terrace two-storey measuring some 850 sq ft. It began as a three-bedroom house but one of the bedrooms - a single - was sacrificed to enlarge the master bedroom. This is at the back of the house, facing south, and now measures a good 14 ft square. The second bedroom is at the front along with a shower room, and both bedrooms have fitted wardrobes.
The ground floor too has just two principal rooms. At the front, inside the small entrance hall, is the kitchen and dining room, where there's a floor-to-ceiling window, porcelain floor tiles and wooden fitted cabinets with granite countertops.
A glazed door leads from the kitchen to the south-facing sitting room at the back of the house, where there's another floor-to-ceiling window, this time overlooking the back garden, and with a door leading to it. This room has solid oak floors and a wood-burning stove in the brick fireplace.
The back garden is paved in sandstone and surrounded by flowerbeds and well-grown shrubs.
At the end of the garden there's a shed, and from there you also reach the designated parking space.
