Pier House, near Baltimore in Co Cork, has a pier, slipway and boathouse. If that doesn't afford enough isolation, it comes with seven small islands. Built about 15 years ago, it has three bedrooms, two of which are on the first floor with a bathroom. The third bedroom, with en-suite, is on the lower level. Also on the ground floor are a kitchen, utility room, sitting room and conservatory. The boathouse on the grounds is about 500 sq/ft and has a fitted winch.

The Crescent is a group of early 19th-century properties close to the harbour at Ardglass, Co Down. Number 4 began as a one-storey cottage in 1828 but was converted to a dormer. The ground floor has a dining room, kitchen, lounge, sun room and study, and there are three bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Outside there's a front garden and a rear patio with a water feature and storehouses. Ardglass Golf Club, the oldest on the island, is five minutes away.

Rossdohan Pier, Co Kerry  €195k

Close to the pier at Rossdohan, near Parknasilla in Co Kerry, is a tiny detached fisherman's cottage in a secluded setting. It's only 665 sq/ft, but there are views of Kenmare Bay and the pier, the idea being that you won't be spending much time indoors. But the site is 0.71 acre, so you may be able to extend it. There's a front living room with a marble fireplace, a kitchen with another open fire and a door to the garden, a bathroom, and two bedrooms.

4 The Coastguard, Co Galway  €275k

The Coastguard is a converted coastguard station at Aillebrack, nearly Ballyconneely in Connemara. It's about 200 metres from Bunowen Pier. Number 4 is semi-detached and relatively small, at 1,023 sq/ft. It has two bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen, living room and dining room with a spiral staircase and two bathrooms. It's three kilometres from Connemara Championship Golf Links, and an hour and a half from Galway city by car.
