Houses don't get much more waterfront than The Lake House, in a secluded location on the banks of a private lake. The house was constructed in 2008, and was designed to fit in with the contours of the rugged landscape that surrounds it.

The Lake House sits on a site of 1.65 acres, and from its highest point there is a 360 degree panorama over the countryside and the Atlantic ocean. At night, the beam of the Fastnet lighthouse hits the side of the house at an oblique angle.

With 195 sqm of living space all arranged on one level, the interior design is informed by a spare, contemporary sensibility that has seen the house featured in several magazines. There are magnificent views from every vantage point, and clean lines, sloping roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows maximise the amount of daylight. An all-white palette combined with wide-plank walnut floors and blocks of subtle earth tones makes for a sophisticated and relaxed feel. Two of the four bedrooms are en suite, and there is also a family bathroom, home office, utility room and garage.

The kitchen, dining and living rooms all face out to the water. From the living room, there is direct access to the water via a deck and patio. The lake is a haven for wildlife, with herons, families of mallard and moor hens, and freshwater fish.

Tiny Goleen and bigger Schull are the nearest villages, the latter a 10-minute drive away. In the summer months it's busy with Dubliners on holiday, and there is plenty of activity in its bars and restaurants. The whole area is something of a foodie's paradise, with an abundance of local and artisan produce available in the shops, and the restaurants taking pride in showcasing the quality of the ingredients available.

The beach at Barleycove is the closest to The Lake House, while the market towns of Bantry and Skibbereen are each within half an hour's drive. Cork Airport is 90 minutes away.

Lissycremin is a traditional-style four-bedroom property on approximately an acre of ground overlooking Dunworley Bay and the beach. The house is full of character, but renovated, and extended to maximise the views. There's a smart SieMatic kitchen, with polished granite surface and Neff appliances ideal for cooking up a storm on holiday, and an Indian sandstone patio for outdoor eating. Downstairs there's a kitchen/dining room and sitting room, plus utility room, while the bedrooms and family bathroom are upstairs. Clonakilty is within easy reach.

This bungalow in Ballymacrown, just a couple of kilometres from trendy Baltimore, sits on an elevated site of c 0.75 acres, in a secluded location enjoying what the agents describe as splendid views over the surrounding countryside. Given the price of many of the properties in this very desirable area, it's an opportunity for those whose pockets are less deep to dip a toe into the market. The location is suitable for either a holiday home or permanent residence. The agents say that the property is in need of substantial renovation, and that a new owner may wish to demolish and rebuild. The existing property is approx 56 sqm.

Cluain Ard in Church Cross near Skibbereen is a traditional stone-built farmhouse with outbuildings on five acres. The location is sheltered and sunny and there are distant views of Roaring Water Bay and beyond. The house has been renovated, extended and restored and downstairs there's an open-plan dining room and kitchen, living room and utility, while upstairs are three bedrooms and a family bathroom. Outside, there are stables, workshops, a carport and a garage, and the agents suggest that the property would be suitable for keeping horses or as a small hobby farm.
