Follow the Yellow Silk Road

This week Sinead Kelly visits Silk Road, the northside's most wonderfully decadent interior shop

IT'S not often you stumble upon a treasure chest of wonderfully original interiors in Dublin today.

But when I stepped into Silk Road, the most decadent of interior shops ever on the north side of Dublin, I was taken into Alladin's cave.

My favourite wallpapers - Ulf Moritz and Brian Yates - are expertly displayed along with amazing and complementing accessories, fabrics and soft furnishings.

Silk Road's founders, Lisa Forde and Eric Ring, felt there was a gap in the home decoration market. They correctly saw the need for a shop where people could access furnishings from around the globe in a relaxed environment.

Hard sell is something you will not experience in this lovely couple's stunning showroom. The chilled and trendy music, the beautiful decor and the luxurious textures encourage you to browse, take your time have a coffee and take it all in.

Set up in January of 2006 after 12 months of painstaking preparation, Silk Road is a perfect blend of European and world furniture.

Beautiful European furniture from France, Belgium and the UK sits perfectly with timeless pieces from the Orient. According to Lisa, herself and Eric choose their products in a very personal way.

When asked about their buying policy Eric simply said: "The inspiration for it all comes from our travels and the friends we have made through the business. If we wouldn't have it in our home, we won't have it in our showroom."

Silk Road has direct relationships with their manufacturers and they have visited the countries and factories where their beautiful items are produced.

"We had to be sure we were happy with the quality and production processes used. We still continuously monitor and assess these criteria," says Eric, and the quality is evident on their floor.

"We pride ourselves on our ability to source the best quality products for our customers, and are continuing to expand the products and services on offer. We supply handcrafted sofas, chairs and beds in a wide variety of fabrics.

"Each piece is tailored to the individual needs of our clients."

Silks curtains and accessories, cushions and throws made for Silk Road's own brand, beautiful silk duvet sets with button-off Egyptian cotton sheets adorn their savvy customers houses.

Unique silk lamps from Thailand and Vietnam, contemporary in style yet with a touch of the tradition, strike a serious pose sitting alongside stunning French sofas.

"We stand by our products and tell our customers if it doesn't suit, just bring it back.

"We think what makes us different is that we enjoy what we do, providing beautiful unique furnishings in a relaxed, yet professional way, at an affordable price," says Eric.

Believe me, Silk Road is a trip worth making.

You'll find them just off the Malahide Road at Unit 95, Malahide Road Industrial Park, which is the left turn after the Woodies/Lidl retail park if you are coming from the Fairview direction.

If you get lost on the way, you can always phone them on 01 848 5044.

Take the time to soak in the wonderful room sets and enjoy.
