Number 39 Suir Road, near the Grand Canal in Kilmainham, Dublin 8, is a good example of just how much can be accomplished in spite of not altogether very auspicious beginnings.

The house is part of a boilerplate two-up-two-down terrace and, from the outside at least, it looks modest and unassuming, if tidy and well cared for.

Once inside the front door, though, it becomes evident that the current owners have let neither their imagination nor their taste be held in check by the plainness of what they had to work with.
