A Dublin 8 house renovation has won the Green Residential Building Award of the Year at the Ireland's Green Awards 2010. Sponsored by the Irish Independent, the award for the design and construction of a sustainable family home was presented to Dublin-based Melted Snow Architects.
A three bed end-of-terrace house, 43 Clarence Mangan Road initially had a low G, energy rating but the revamp boosted it to B1. The project involved two extensions and a complete renovation.
It incorporated many energy efficient elements including super-insulation, triple-glazed windows, solar-panels, as well as rain-water harvesting.
The environmental aspects cost €20,000, or less than 10pc of the overall cost, and the combined gas and electricity bills came to less than €900 for the first year of operation.
