Antiques, now there's something worthwhile

As we all await Budget 2014 and the further tightening of the purse strings, we wonder where's safe to stash our cash. Aside from locations like the mattress, antiques have always been a good place to start. The 48th Irish Antique Dealers Fair takes place from Friday to Sunday at the RDS. It opens each day at 11am and stays open late on Friday until 9pm. Expect to find fine antiques, art from the country's leading dealers and vintage jewellery, including Cobwebs in Galway. Even if you come with empty pockets you can take in the free guest lectures and displays on restoration, interior design and conservation.
Roxane Moorhead will speak about art deco furniture designers on Friday at noon and Fidelma Mullane takes to the floor on Saturday at 4pm discussing glass plate colourful photography. Admission is €10 in Hall 1 of the RDS. www.iada.ie
