The family-favourite Labrador is the breed with the highest canine attack personal injury claims, according to research by pet insurer Animal Friends.

The research found that a third of attacks involve postmen and delivery drivers – although the German Shepard is the main culprit of these incidents.

Out of these attacks, 54% were due to the dogs not being kept securely, while 35% occurred through the letterbox.

Some of the injuries included puncture wounds, scarring and amputation.

Animal psychologist Dr Roger Mugford said the best thing for postmen to do is befriends the dogs and keep a bag of treats on hand.

“Once a man befriends a dog, they will be friends for life,” he said.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Border Collie are other breeds most commonly associated with attacks.
