Spinach is the snack that made cartoon character Popeye famously strong. But today, it might be credited with giving him good eyesight.

Spinach and its cousin kale contain large quantities of the nutrient lutein, which has been linked to a reduced risk of cataract surgery.

Plus, it contains carotenoids beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, both of which are important for eye health.

Other foods that are good for the eyes include:

* Salmon, tuna and other oily fish

* Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources

* Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices.

Eating a well-balanced diet also lessens risk of type 2 diabetes, which increases vision-loss risk.
