Mindful moment: A dose of calm is just what the doctor ordered…
There's a lot of hysteria around at the moment - and understandably so. There is a Chinese curse that says "May you live in interesting times", and between Donald Trump's unpredictable presidency, Brexit, government instability and looming public service strikes, we are most certainly doing that.
But now more than ever is the time to stay calm, because anxiety is contagious. We pick it up from others around us, just as you would a cold.
An essay by designer Mike Monteiro explains that in his office they have a rule: Stop Adopting Other People's Anxiety. He says that what is needed at work, and indeed life, is the 'calm doctor' approach.
When you go to the doctor with a broken leg, the last thing you need is for him to start telling you how awful the situation is, how it's the worst break he's ever seen. What you need is for him to stay calm and see what can be done to fix the problem.
A doctor's calmness is contagious which means that soon everything feels better. Try to administer some calm in your own life.
