Mindful moment… Embrace the power of the pivot

The pivot approach could be very useful in life
The pivot approach could be very useful in life

Last night, while watching the comedy series Silicon Valley about the crazy world of tech start-ups, I came across a business term that I can't get out of my mind. It's called 'pivoting' and refers to a business's ability to completely change course when something isn't working out.

Apparently a lot of very big tech companies form this way - they start off doing one thing, only to realise that it's not popular but could be used for something else entirely.

It is also, of course, the move you make in basketball, when you keep one foot on the ground and move the other one around so that you change direction. But while most of us are neither tech whizz-kids nor basketball players, it seems that this approach could be very useful in life.

Things rarely happen as we want them to and this causes us unhappiness - but instead of doggedly continuing on the road we set ourselves, what if we take a look at where we are and think: "Is there somewhere else I should be pivoting to?"
