Mindful moment… Don't let your imagination run loose
Imagine you are running down the street being chased by two attackers, when you suddenly find yourself at a dead end. The men are approaching fast. What do you do?
Well, you could stop imagining.
I heard this example given on a podcast by meditation teacher, Tara Brach, who argues that 99pc of our anxieties and fears come from stories that we make up in our heads.
These negative thoughts are not real and we can stop them at any time. But as easy as it sounds, it's not.
Catching the constant loop of negative thinking takes awareness and patience. "Look, there I am, doing it again," is what I tell myself when I catch myself in another thought about being broke, fat, ugly or never being able to work again...
Other people suggest wearing a rubber band around your wrist and pinging it every time you have a negative thought. I think it's meant to snap you into reality - quite literally.
