How to safely buy pills online

People buying non-prescription medicines online should look out for a new EU logo which verifies that it is reputable.

The logo came into force in late June and is aimed at making it safer to buy medicines on the internet.

The purchase of prescription medicines remains illegal here and people are warned about the risks of dodgy products. Now, to verify the seller of non-prescription medicines, the logo will link to the national regulatory authority, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.

Members of the public can check the seller is entered on its internet supply list and authorised to supply non-prescription medicines online.

Suppliers in other EU countries can supply non-prescription medicines into Ireland as long as the product supplied has been authorised for use in Ireland by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).

These EU websites must also display the EU common logo, but will display the flag of the country in which it is established.
