How to report elder abuse

It is estimated that for every case of elder abuse reported, another five never come to light.
In 2014, there were a total of 2,592 referrals made to the HSE's elder abuse service - an increase of 5pc on referrals from 2013. Of these, psychological abuse was the most frequently reported form of abuse at 29pc, followed by financial abuse (21pc), self-neglect (21pc), neglect (15pc) and physical abuse (12pc).
Some 66pc of referrals related to women and, of these, the majority were in the over-80s age category (54pc). Public health nurses make the most referrals.
Anyone experiencing elder abuse can call the HSE Information Line on 1850 24 1850, Monday to Saturday, 8am-8pm, or contact a health professional such as GP, public health nurse or social worker.
