Heart disease time bomb
Lack of time has been cited as one of the reasons why many Irish GPs are not using more screening tools to identify patients who may be at risk of cardiovascular disease.
A study led by the Glanmire Medical Centre in Cork examined the use of risk assessment tools and prevention guidelines among a group of 213 GPs.
While 197 (92.5pc) of GPs were aware of at least one tool, only 69 (32.4pc) reported frequent use. Also, 187 (87.8pc) GPs were aware of one or more cardiovascular prevention guidelines with 115 (54.0pc) GPs reporting frequent use of at least one guideline. No age or gender difference observed. Barriers to implementation also included a lack of remuneration and too many guidelines, the Irish Medical Journal reported.
