Greetings from New York City! I'm in my favourite place on earth, and despite my best plans I'm eating rings around myself. How can you not when on holiday and everything tastes so good?! I'm crossing my fingers and toes that my little black dress looks good when I wear it this weekend... Surely a few days of gigantic portions and carbs won't undo weeks and weeks of hard work... right?!

I had my last personal training session with Mairead at One Escape (www.oneescape.ie) the day before we left - while it was the final session of this experiment, it definitely won't be the last appointment I have with her. She's made exercise (gasp) fun for me, understood that there were some movements that my body just hated (hello, deadlifts) and while she pushed me, she was always very mindful of me enjoying myself. My waist is three inches smaller than it was on day one, my bust is neater (thank god, because F cups were not my friend) and my hips, thighs and legs are all far more toned. Even my arms, my least favourite body part, look so much better. At my last weigh in with Mairead, I was at 76kg, down 5kg total.

And that's all been down to exercise. Sure, I've cleaned up my act when it comes to food in a big way, but I've been no angel as anyone who's followed this column from the start will know. I've still eaten out, had the odd takeaway, munched on chocolate and gone out on the razz. I know if I wasn't moving my body four times a week, I wouldn't be seeing results at all. But because I've been working out hard, I've built muscle, zapped fat and feel so much better mentally and physically.

We've been in the US since Friday last and I've managed to work out three times and walk absolutely loads; a day on/day off regime here is the best way to combat the delicious food I'm eating. Without being too burdensome. I've had mac & cheese, donuts, sweet potato fries and pizza, but I guess I haven't been going overboard, or at least not as much as I normally would. There's been no stacks of pancakes, no bags of Reese's cups and no dessert for the hell of it. I've been eating turkey where possible, sticking with smaller portions, drinking lots of water and avoiding the convenience store aisles because it's the only way not to completely annihilate my progress.

I turn 30 on Friday, so I'll be weighing myself and attempting to shimmy in to the little black dress I set as a target back in October. Next week's column will be my last!
