Bestselling author Martina Reilly chats about sprinting, the temptation of mayonnaise and biscuits, and how she would be much more productive if she were an early bird
Do you consider yourself to have a healthy lifestyle?
For the most part. I exercise, I socialise and I've a really good work/life balance – the scales are tipped very much in favour of life.
Do you exercise regularly? If so, what do you do?
For the last five years, I've been running regularly. I hated it until a mid-life crisis took hold and advised me to take up sprinting. So that's what I do now...
Do you do it willingly or begrudgingly?
It depends. If I know what we'll be doing in training that night, I live in dread. If I don't, I'm happily oblivious until I turn up at the track. Though, I guess I wouldn't keep turning up unless I liked it.
What time do you go to bed?
Depends on what's on the telly.
What time do you get up in the morning?
During school term, I'm up at 7:50 and it's a mad dash to get my daughter out to school. When holidays come, I sleep until I wake. Not much writing takes place in the summer.
What do you have for breakfast?
I'm not a big breakfast person. Usually cornflakes and tea.
That varies. Usually a sandwich. Because I'm vegetarian, it'll be healthy until I smear it with huge dollops of mayonnaise.
Potatoes, vegetables and a veggie burger. Or something I've made myself. My favourite is Thai curry.
It was all going so well...yes...piles upon piles of biscuits.
Do you take any supplements?
Iron now and again when I feel my running is slowing down.
How much water do you drink?
Probably not enough. I'll have it if I'm thirsty and not in the mood for tea or coffee.
Do you have a skincare routine?
I wash my face with an Artistry cleanser which my friend gets for me and then usually Oil of Olay to moisturise.
Does an aversion to housework count?
Eating way too many biscuits. Too much mayonnaise. Not doing enough housework.
If I could change one thing about my lifestyle it would be ...
That I could enjoy getting up early because I'd be so much more productive.
