Mum-of-three who shed four stone in 12 months: 'First step is the hardest'

Sandra Eiffe is proof that New Year's resolutions can work after she lost four stone in the past 12 months.

Her warning to anyone else thinking of losing a few pounds is that "the first step is the hardest".

But mum-of-three Sandra took that step last January and hasn't looked back.

Originally from Donaghmede in Dublin, she says she did not know her weight before she got on the scales at her GP's surgery just before Christmas last year.

"She asked me to stand on the scales. I was shocked to find I was over 14-and-a-half stone," said Sandra, who now lives in Ratoath, Co Meath.

"I didn't realise I was so heavy. I was plodding along and if I got clothes to fit me I was okay with things."

Sandra took her GP's advice to heart about the health benefits of losing weight, and with the support of her friend Roslyn McDonnell she joined a slimming class in Ratoath.

Since then she's lost four stone and says she's done it simply by making healthy choices.

"Before I never had a breakfast. Now I have one every morning," she said.

"I would have been quite happy to sit down and eat a few packets of crisps in one go.

"Not any more - now I eat properly and I love to munch on lettuce."

Instead of having a sandwich with crisps on the side, she will have a salad on the side.

With a new way of thinking about food, Sandra has never been happier.

She said she has never felt that she is missing out if the rest of her family - husband Martin and Jade (23), Abbie (16) and Evan (14) - are ordering a takeaway.

"While Martin runs out and gets the pizza for the others, I'll make myself a burger with low-calorie chips and salad and I feel like I'm eating the same as the rest of the family," she said.

"I did all of this during 2015. My words of advice to anyone thinking of losing weight and getting healthy is to take the first step."
