Tough breakups can often be a catalyst for comfort eating, but for Dubliner Sarah Jane Gibson the end of a relationship was the motivation she needed to transform her body and shift more than six stone (38kg).
Sarah Jane (25) from Dublin City began her weight loss journey two weeks before she discovered her ex-boyfriend had been unfaithful but admitted that her heartbreak gave her the motivation to persevere.
Once weighing 16st 4lb (103kg), the child-minder has dropped an incredible five dress sizes and said the Slimming World process has had a huge impact on her life.
“Just as things seemed to be looking good for me, the night before my second weigh in I found out that my then boyfriend had cheated on me. I ended it immediately and when I got home my brother said something in conversation with me that has stuck with me to this very day. He said: ’You can climb, or you can crumble from this’. I decided to climb,” she said.
Although Sarah-Jane’s initial drive was proving herself in the aftermath of her breakup, the 25-year-old said after a few months losing weight became something she was doing for herself.
“After my breakup I saw a post by Khloe Kardashian which said ‘The best revenge is a great body’ and I identified with that a bit at the beginning. However, after a few months it became about myself and my own confidence. People always ask me what my ex’s reaction was to my weight-loss and the truth is that by the time I saw him again it didn’t even matter to me anymore. It was about me,” she said.
After investing time into her own happiness, Sarah-Jane joined popular dating app Tinder, where she met her current boyfriend Ian. The pair have been together since July 2014 and Ian himself has lost five stone (31kg) on the programme.
“He is the most caring, loving and thoughtful man I have ever met. After we had dated for a couple of weeks he became more and more curious about Slimming World, he was unhappy with his weight but rather than suggest to him to join, I began making him some Slimming World favourites. He joined a few months later and has lost an amazing five stone to date,” Sarah Jane said.
The couple have lost a combined 11st.
“I’ve gone from being the girl who used to get breathless walking up stairs, to beating my own time each year in the Women’s Mini Marathon. I am proud of how I have changed my life for the better. I also met a lady in my group who I now work as a child-minder for, so you could say I've gotten a job out of Slimming World too."
Inspired by the people who have helped keep her on track with the programme, Sarah-Jane will launch her own Slimming World class in the New year.
“I want to help other people to discover how to lose weight like I did, through support, no judgement, and eating to their own appetite,” she said.
Sarah-Jane’s group will open in All Saints Parish Hall on Phibsborough Road on January 2 at 7.30.
