Each week, we at Independent Woman investigate what's new and cutting edge in the battle to remain young and beautiful. This week, in a bid to zap stubborn fat, we sampled the delights of the Arasys slimming treatment at Neelu's Salon.

What is it?

A non invasive slimming treatment which provides an interrupted electrical current to muscles. By using small shocks to contract and relax muscles, 20 minutes of therapy is the equivalent of 3 hours gym time. Stubborn fat on tums and thighs can be targeted more efficiently, and according to the salon, results are visible after just one treatment.

Sorry did you say electricity?

Don't panic. It's not like they strap down your arms and plug you into the fuse box. The treatment uses a low voltage and takes place within the comfort of a salon and is administered by a trained professional.

What's the process?

On arrival, vital measurements are taken and the areas to be treated are decided upon. Like most women, I fancied zapping some rather stubborn tummy luggage. After being placed on my back wires were attached to damp pads on my stomach and those awkward abs where worked on for 20 minutes.

How does it work?

The treatment works by bypassing the brain signals which normally activate the muscles during exercise. By finding the nerves directly and providing an interrupted current, the muscles contract and relax in the same way they would during a workout but at a greater frequency.

What are the benefits?

Stubborn pockets of fat that simply won't budge can be toned to perfection. The treatment allows for specific areas to be targeted, so you don't need to break a sweat and your energy won't be wasted on something as imprecise as sit-ups. The treatment is also said to boost blood circulation which in turn helps eliminate toxins.

Who likes it?

Sharon Stone, Cameron Diaz, Madonna, Meryl Streep and Daryl Hannah are all said to be fans.

How long does it take?

Each session takes 20 minutes making it pretty handy as a lunchtime treatment. If it's your first go, allow another 20 minutes for a consultation with your therapist.

The best bit?

Probably the cheating factor. By the next day I did feel as though I had been putting in some serious gym work. My abs were crunched!

Any downsides?

Probably the sensation. Just because this isn't done in the gym doesn't necessarily mean you won't feel the burn. As the current pulses through the muscles the contractions can feel quite strong and I must admit to being a little scared as my therapist adjusted the electrical pulse to a level I found to be more comfortable.

I'm in ... where to next?

The Arasys treatment is priced from €65 per session and is available from Neelu's Salon at Arnotts. For more information telephone 01-8050400 or visit http://www.neelus-salon.com.
